A developer working on Ethereum sharding has stated that the Casper upgrade which will implement Proof of Stake (PoS) to the network may be ready in 2019. Sharding splits nodes into groups so that each group has the same capacity as the entire current Ethereum network.

Ethereum 2.0, which contains both the Casper upgrade and the future sharding capabilities, will be launched in phases as sharding is not expected to be ready for a few more years.

While both Casper and sharding will be a drastic upgrade to the network which will still maintain decentralization and heightened security, an even further upgrade which is planned to have super quadratic scaling is in the early research phase.
