On August 9th, 27-year-old Thai actor Jiratpisit “Boom” Jiravijit, was arrested by Bangkok police during a film-shoot following a 6-month long investigation relating to a Bitcoin money-laundering scheme.

In June of 2017, Jiravijit and 6 others convinced a Finnish man, Aarni Otava Saarimaa, to invest a sizeable chunk of cryptocurrency with them, under the assumption that the funds would be used to buy shares in companies that would offer him dividends.

These “companies” supposedly invested in Dragon Coin, a cryptocurrency project which claims to pair blockchain technology with the entertainment industry.

Saarimaa made the investment and transferred 5,564 BTC ($24 million USD) to the suspects, but started to become suspicious when he was never invited to any shareholders’ meetings.

Jiratpisit arrives at a local police station in handcuffs which have been blurred out.

He claims Jiravijit and others repeatedly “sidestepped” his questions when he asked for updates and he ultimately received none of the dividends which were promised to him.

Not knowing where to turn, Saarimaa filed a complaint with the Royal Thai Police on January 30 of this year and an investigation began.

The Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) stated that the suspects actually withdrew the BTC Saarimaa sent from the receiving wallet, converted it fiat, and deposited it back into their own bank accounts.

The courts issued warrants for all suspects, and Jaravijit was arrested yesterday during a film-shoot at the Major Cineplex Ratchayothin complex. He has been detained on charges of money-laundering, and there are still outstanding warrants for the other suspects, including Jaravijit’s brother and sister who allegedly took part in the scheme.
